What a Charge-Off Actually Means for Your Private Student Loan
August 17, 2026 Mark McGinnis
If you just saw the words “charged off” next to your private student loan, take a breath. It sounds final. It is not.
Here is what actually happened. After a long stretch of missed payments, usually somewhere around 120 to 180 days for private loans, the lender moved your loan from the “expect to collect” column to the “loss” column on its own books. That is what a charge-off is. It is something the lender did to its accounting, not something a court did to you.
Here is what it does not mean. It does not mean the debt disappeared. You still owe it, and the lender, a collection agency, or a debt buyer can still try to collect. It does not mean you were sued. A lawsuit is a separate step that may or may not ever happen. And it does not mean your financial life is over. Charge-offs sit on credit reports for a set period, and their weight fades as they age and as you add positive history.
Here is what often happens next. The loan may stay with your original lender’s recovery department, be placed with a collection agency, or be sold to a debt buyer. Each handoff matters, because it changes who you would be negotiating with and what paperwork exists. Keep every letter you receive. If someone contacts you, you have the right to ask them to verify the debt in writing before you discuss anything.
And here is the part almost nobody tells you: a charged-off private student loan is exactly the situation where real options can still exist. Depending on your circumstances, those may include negotiating with the current owner of the debt, setting up a payment arrangement, refinancing the defaulted balance into a new loan, or, in serious hardship, talking with a bankruptcy attorney. Private student loans are far harder to discharge in bankruptcy than ordinary debt and often survive a filing, so treat that as a conversation with a lawyer rather than a plan A.
